Uberthons Luckython 2016 Race Review

Saturday March 12th was my 4th time running Uberthons Luckython.  I have always ran the 5k, but I ran the 10k this year.  I've been running since Oct 2008 and had yet to run an official 10k!

Races:  5k, 10k, 15k, 15k Relay, and Kidathon

Place:  The Reserve Vineards and Golf Club in Aloha, OR

Times:  5k 8:00 am and 9:00 am start
5k, 10k, 15k and 15k relay, 9:00 am start
Kidathon 10:00 am start

My fully loaded potato.

All finishers received an awesome Luckython Belt-buckle Medal and a trip through the Potato Bar.
There were plenty of tables and chairs under the large tent for finishers to eat and find out race results.  The three tall heaters where a plus on this windy wet morning.

I arrived early Saturday to help with a few things. Many volunteers were already there setting up.  It was wet and windy but there was a nice set up inside the tent! I helped with selling Uberthons gear!  They have some awesome shirts, a jacket, scarves, hats and athletic socks you can purchase at any Uberthons race.

I got to lead the walkers and runners in a few pre-race stretching.  This ended up being a lot of fun!  It was chilly, so moving around to get warmed up felt really good. The 8:00 walker/runners took off and then we got the 9:00 walker/runners checked in and ready to go!

9:00 am was when my race stated (the 10k).  I always like to come up with some sort of goal pace/time.  Today I just thought 48:00 minutes because that's what my Hood to Coast Captain threw out as a guess for my time.  This just happens to be Uberthons Alan!  The 10k was two large loops around the paved golf course (south side).  I wore my rain jacket because I was so cold at the starting line.  After mile one, I knew that wearing the jacket was a very bad idea!  There was a few small rolling hills during the first mile, then it started to even out.  At mile two, I took my race bib off so I could remove my jacket and gloves.  I know better than to overdress for a
race, so I was very irritated at myself!
As I came around to the finish line for the 5k, I handed off my jacket and gloves to a lady who was helping out, giving runners directions.  She gladly took my stuff and pointed me in the right direction.  Doing the loop again.  I felt much better without my jacket and gloves but had dropped my safety pins.  I had to carry my bib but I didn't mind.  Was glad to have that jacket off!  Now, the temperature felt perfect for racing.
It was about 42-44 degrees, with some wind and rain.  There were some puddles out on the course, but it wasn't that bad.  I dipped down into the rollers a second time and knew I only had about two miles left.  I was feeling pretty good with my pace.
As I came around for that last mile, I was pretty sure I was in second place for female finishers but there was a lady not too far behind me.
I tried to keep my pace steady, to keep her from getting any closer. I ran through that finish line with a time of exactly 48:00 minutes. I couldn't believe it!  It was my exact goal time!
I went to the tent to eat and potato and be with some friends.
My husband lead the kids race at 10:00.  It was raining even harder at this time, but the kids didn't seem to mind!
Uberthon's Darwin was back at the tent giving out age group winner medals and making announcements on upcoming Uberthons events!

There are LOTS of fun Uberthons races already planned for 2016.  Check them out HERE!  I would love to meet you!

“This was my very first Uberthons race. I thought it was extremely well put on and I loved that it wasn’t too crowded. Everyone was very friendly and I love the medal/belt buckle, such a cool idea! The baked potato bar was a great touch as it warmed our bellies after racing across the finish line in the cold, rainy weather. Overall, I was very happy I attended and I am already putting several more Uberthons races on my calendar in the near future. My daughter is hoping to join me as well!”  ~Kristi Clack (1st time running an Uberthons event)

Run Your Tutu Off 2015

Stacy, Erika, Lucy and me
Saturday February 21st I headed to Chrystal Lake Park in Corvallis OR to run "Run your tutu off 5k"
I got to the park at 9:30 to meet my friends.  We went and got our running bibs and still had time to go back to our cars to get rid of jackets/etc.  I was really glad parking was so close.

Shortly after 10:00 we lined up on the paved walking path to hear instructions and get started.  There were men, women, walkers, runners, children and doggies all dressed in colorful tutu's ready to get moving. My friend brought her little Boston Lucy.  Lucy was the cutest little thing out there!  Lucy even won a trophy and was the first dog to cross the finish line!  She is a master dog runner!!!!

Lucy the winner!
We were off, along with 105 other walker/runners.  My friend Erica and I ran together with Lucy the dog.  We started about half way back into the pack.  We should of started up front.  We had to make our way around walkers.  I know better than this, but forgot to get up towards the front this day.

We ran on a smooth paved path the whole 3.1 miles.  We ran along part of the Willamette River.  It was a chilly but sunny beautiful Oregon morning.  Perfect running weather. There were people along the course holding signs, cheering us on as we ran by.

About mile 1.5 or 2 we came to some rolling hills.  At the top of the last hill was a water station and the turn-a-round.  The turn-a-round was a little over half way.  I loved turning around.  We got to see all the other runners, walkers and doggies go by.  It was a fun atmosphere.

The finish line was about a quarter mile from where we started from.  We got a little cool down walk back to the vendor/registration area.  It was nice and relaxing at this park so I didn't mind at all.
Goody Bags for everyone

We were handed a goody bag and checked to see if our bib number won any prizes.  There were prizes like gift cards to sports authority.  There were some prize trophies too.  They were handmade and super cute.

Doggy Treat Station
Erika gave Lucy a dog treat from the doggie station.  We went over to the Zoup table for free samples of three different kinds of delicious soups.  We got a bowl of whatever kind we liked best.  There was also a table with bagels, bananas and blueberries.  Dutch Bros had some drinks available too.

Emily did a fantastic job making this a fun event to come walk, or run with friends.  I like that anyone could do this one.  Men, women, children, doggies, walk or run!  Everyone was welcome!

It was held on Saturday February 21st at Chrystal Lake Park in Corvallis OR. at 10:00 am

Next year mark your calender for the third Saturday in February.  This event will most likely be held at the same spot.

Adults $25.00
Children $10.00
Children under 5 were free
Registration was available on line before the race, and the morning of the race from 9:00-9:45 am

$1900 was raised and went to benefit the Benton Furniture Share.

I recommend this race for 2016 if your looking for a very fun 5k to run or walk with a friend or your dog!  I had a blast running with my friends and I know they feel the same way.

Uberthons NewYearathon 2015

I picked Uberthons NewYearathon to be my first race of 2015.  I love Uberthons events.  I rounded up several Dallas, OR area friends and we headed to the race on January 3rd.

Runners warming themselves with the
nice heaters.
The race was held at Cook Park in Tigard OR.  It was very easy to find and there was plenty of parking.  It was a cold morning.  We had picked up our race bibs the night before, but race day pick up was going on over near the starting line. There were two nice large warming heaters for runners and walkers to huddle around.  My friends and I headed off to find the restrooms and to get warmed up.  There were several restrooms all over the park.  I saw a few people I knew and got ready to start the race.

Jerry and me with our cool new bling!
First was the 1 mile warm up.  I was going to run this with my 10 year old but he didn't end up coming.  I watched two friends run this!  I was getting excited for the 5k.  I have never run a race this close to the beginning of the year.  Typically over November and December I am not in training so I'm not excited to race in January.  This year, I did a November running challenge and ended up stretching it to Christmas.  I felt I was in better shape this January and was excited to start the year with a good 5k!

The 5k started about 9 am.  Darwin from Uberthons let the kids come up front to start the race with a 30 second head start.  I love how Uberthons promotes active lifestyle for the whole family.  This race was chip timed so we took off in waves.  I left in the 3rd wave of runners.  It was pretty packed at first.  Some of the path was a little narrow.  It was a beautiful safe path through the park, mostly paved, partly trail.  Around mile two we had to go up and down a small but challenging hill.  The rest of the course was fairly flat.  Part of the course we came back around and could see other runners/walkers going out.  I like races where you can see other runners coming and going in all different pace groups.

Eric and Erika after the race, great job!!!
As we came back into the main part of Cook Park we did a short out and back before coming into the finish line.  This was a fun part for me because I got to see all my friends who were in front of me and behind me!  So much fun!  I came into the finish line to start off my 2015 with a nice 5k PR!

After the race my friends and I went for a short cool down run and then got bananas and hot chocolate provided by Uberthons!  We were able to get a print up of our race times but had to wait to find out if we placed in our age group. Age group winners were announced after the kidathon race.  Alan from Uberthons lead the kids in a loop around the park.  It was really fun to watch!

My Husband ran a PR time today too! Great job Jerry!
Check out these AWESOME medals!

My friends and I had a wonderful morning running and hanging out at the Uberthons Newyearathon.  This is a race I would definitely run again.  It was a fairly fast course.  There was one small hill and several turns that made it not the fastest course.  I like that it was off road, in a park.  I like that it was family friendly but competitive if you want to race.
Found more friends! Great job Sheila and Brittany!
Newyearsathon was open to 400 people.  330 people finished the race.
Uberthons offered a 1 mile race for $14
5k for $22
Both the 1 mile and 5k for $25
Kidathon for FREE ($10 for a kids medal)

Something extra:  On my facebook page I have done two Uberthons I CAN DO THIS Challenge's.  My last challenge ended the end of December and one of the bonus challenges was signing up for an Uberthons race in 2015.  My winner, Betsy Seth was there, running the 1 mile and 5k.  I was able to present her with a Uberthons shirt after the race was over.  This was so much fun. I love how Uberthons encourages a healthy lifestyle for the whole family.

I highly recommend Uberthons races.  They are family friendly but also competitive.  Darwin, Alan and their crew are some of the best I have meet.  They put on quality fun events and do so much for the communities they work with.  Check out these upcoming races.  Most of them I will be at and look forward to seeing you!

Currently just over 700 have registered. It is chipped timed. If you like to dress up, there is a contest for the best costume but costumes aren't required.  Packet pick-up will be Friday the 18th at the Phoenix Inn & Suites in Albany from 8-4.  If you can't make that, you can pick up your packet Saturday morning from 7:00-8:45.  You will get your awesome shirt at this time too.  There will be age group winner/prizes and the first place male/female will receive a $250 gift card to Lowe's and a free entry for next years race!  How sweet is that!?
